1Password says it wants to give customers a glimpse into the future of password management and promote passwordless logins. The company is prepping a universal single sign-on experience that works the same regardless of the login or authentication method used.
Support for passkeys’ entirely passwordless authentication may seem like a bewildering feature for a password management service, but 1Password isn’t even the first, with Dashlane already integrating passkeys into its own service earlier this year. Apple has already rolled out support for passkeys via the iCloud Keychain in macOS Ventura and iOS 15, and Google recently announced passkey beta testing for Chrome and Android. Microsoft hasn’t announced public testing yet.
Passkeys use the WebAuthn standard created by the FIDO Alliance and the World Wide Web Consortium, and they serve to replace passwords with cryptographic key pairs -- a public key that can be shared and a private key that is not -- that allow users to sign into accounts.
1Password announced it’s developing a custom implementation of passkeys called Universal Sign On. According to the organization, the implementation is more open than other solutions currently in development.
For now, 1Password users need to use Chrome or Chromium-based Edge to use the passkey demo, which uses a fake service called PassParcel to create a real WebAuthn credential that is saved to the user's 1Password account. 1Password notes that it is adding support for Firefox and Safari "soon."
